The Rebuilding Beings

With the expectations of several suspensions baring down on the New Orleans Saints the need for them to rebuild the defense becomes a must of this offseason.

The Saints took great steps in that direction Saturday night with the acquisition of former Atlanta Falcons Linebacker Curtis Lofton. Lofton will help solidify a Saints defense that may still look to add more depth in the linebacker corp. Talk of Seattle Seahawk’s David Hawthorne joining New Orleans has been thrown around. If the Saints add Hawthorne as well, expect the same ole Saints team to win the NFC south one more time, as they will have successfully battled against “BountyGate”.

Saints add Chris Chamberlain from Rams

The New Orleans Saints have added linebacker Chris Chamberlain from the Rams.  This should be the first in a line of defensive player signings.  The Saints are in the process of protecting themselves from the upcoming round of suspensions that will be dealt out.  Many expect the NFL league office will suspend linebacker Jonathan Vilma for at least the entire 2012 season, that’s where Chamberlain comes in.

Expect the Saints to add some more depth on the defensive line and at the safety position.   There is not a lot of high end talent that New Orleans will be able to bring in, most players already agreeing to deals with other teams, and the Saints are going to be hindered by the Salary Cap.

The Saints have been a top tier team in the NFL for the past 4 seasons and were looking to continue on the trend in 2012, however the fallout of the Bounty program being run in New Orleans has devastated this team, at least for this season.  They have lost draft picks, coaching and front office members and soon up to 27 players.

Former Saint Tracy Porter Joins Denver

Tracy Porter the former New Orleans Saints Corner Back has agreed to a 1yr 4 million dollar deal with the Denver Broncos. Porter reportedly will start opposite veteran corner Champ Baily.

Porter brings much needed youth to the secondary in Denver, we still expect to see them pick up another corner back in the draft, possibly early on with a selection like Dre Kirkpatrick or Stephon Gilmore in the first round. More than likely though the will look for a hard nosed smash mouth Defensive Tackle to take the pressure of their outside pass rushers Elvis Dumervil and 2nd year stud Von Miller.

News from New Orleans

Malcolm Jenkins is working out a Free Safety during the Saints OTAs. Head Coach Sean Payton says they expect to see Jenkins move around a lot on the D this year. Jenkins, who was drafted as a corner, may play free safety, the nickel corner as well as in the box playing the normal role of the strong safety.

Also at Saints camp, Tight End Jeremy Schockey was taken to a New Orleans hospital in an ambulance from Saints OTAs. Schockey was “shakey” for about a minute before walking to the ambulance and being driven to the hospital
