Otah Done in Carolina, Panthers Part Ways

The Carolina Panthers officially cut ties with often injured tackle Jeff Otah

Otah had been a first round pick of the Panthers back in 2008 (19th overall), but had fallen out of favor with the NFC South club.  Carolina had attempted to deal Otah to the New York Jets earlier this offseason, however when he failed to pass the teams physical exam the trade was voided.

The Panthers are still on the Salary Cap hook for just under $300,000 to Otah, however by waiving him they free up a valuable roster spot for someone who wants to play, as well as, nearly $800,000 in cap room.

Cleveland Browns move to Tennessee

Ok, Not really, there are currently no plans to move the team, but the Cleveland Browns sale has been completed. Tennessee business man Jimmy Haslam is the proud new owner of a failing franchise.  League sources quote the sale as being over the $1 Billion dollar mark.

Ben Roethlisberger Injury Update

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, has a slightly torn rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder.  The injury, according to Big Ben, happened last November in a game against Steelers rivals the Baltimore Ravens.   Roethlisberger was quoted by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazzette as saying

I have a little torn rotator cuff. That doesn’t heal. We just have to hope it doesn’t tear the rest of the way, according to Doc

Braylon Edwards becomes a Seahawk

The Seattle Seahawks have added veteran wide receiver Braylon Edwards to their roster.  Edwards who started his career with the Cleveland Browns, moved to the Jets when he refused to resign in Cleveland.  He had 2 decent seasons in New York prior to being released and then signing with the San Francisco 49ers.

Marvin Lewis Contract Extended

The Cincinnati Bengals have agreed to extend the contract of Head Coach Marvin Lewis through the 2014 NFL season.  Lewis who has coached the Bengals to 6 winning seasons and three playoff appearances in his nine year tenure in Cincinnati

Lewis who insisted on having more personnel control after his last contract negotiations has led the Bengals back to football prominence.  The drafting of A.J. Green and Andy Dalton last season sky rocketed the Bengals in to contention in a very difficult AFC North.  Many experts have predicted the Bengals are a team on the rise, but I’m not so sure.  The Bengals are a much better team than they were 3 years ago.  Gone is the idea that you need an arrest record to play in Cincinnati, however, looking at their schedule from last year, I’m not ready to crown them yet.

Jets and Otah are No More

The New York Jets attempt to bolster their offensive line crash landed on Tuesday.  Jeff Otah, formerly and now again with the Carolina Panthers, failed his physical with the Jets thus voiding the trade between the two teams.

The Jets have been looking all over the league for a tackle that can protect well enough in the passing game to allow for Mark Sanchez to have enough time in the pocket for receiver Santonio Holmes to get open down field.  At the same time they are in need of a run blocking tackle to add to the Tim Tebow dimension.  Otah was thought to be the perfect fit, but he seems unable to get healthy for a litany of injuries over the past 3 seasons.

Shannon Eastin to Ref NFL Game

The NFL front office announced today that the possibility of a woman officiating an NFL game is no longer a possibility, its a fact.

Shannon Eastin will be the first woman to work as an NFL official during league game play.  Eastin has refereed over the last decade with the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.  NFL head of Officials had said last year that women officials were coming sooner rather than later, but no one expected it to be this season.  Johnson stated, “Our goal is to get the best people working this game.”

Felix Jones Fails Conditioning Test

Dallas Cowboy running back, Felix Jones, failed the teams mandatory conditioning test on Monday.  Running Backs in the Cowboys system need to be able to run 50 yards in 7 seconds (nearly 2.5 seconds slower than Jones ran his 40 at the combine).

Jones along with Safety Brodney Pool and receiver Andre Holmes failed their conditioning tests and are being held out of training camp.  Jones, who has had fantasy value in the past, is the clear cut backup in Dallas.  DeMarco Murray has set himself miles ahead of Jones in not only ability but desire as well.  Jones, who is in the last year of his contract, had been expected to come in and be a third down / change of pace back for the Cowboys this season.

Felix Jones has little to no fantasy relevance going forward.  He may be worth a late round pick up as a handcuff to Murray but holds no value on his own.
