Cleveland Browns Breakdown

So, years ago it was thought that Mike Holmgren was a football genius, that his eye for talent rivaled that of John the Baptist.  Yeah, those days are gone, either that or the city of Cleveland is cursed (2nd more likely).

Cleveland has had draft picks early and often and Holmgren and his boys have used those picks on over-rated quarterbacks, egotistical tight ends, under-performing wide receivers, slow and stiff defenders and offensive lineman, and finally one stud running back.  Trent Richardson does seem to have all the skills and the body type to be a 3 down back in the NFL.  He’s got great speed and strength and amazing vision, it’s possible that he may be the player the Browns can lean on for the next 5 to 7 years.

With all that taken into account, it’s still the Browns.  Richardson may be the second coming of Jim Brown, but with a sub-par offensive line and either tiny Colt McCoy or ancient rookie Brandon Weeden playing quarterback, it’s going to be a tough season for the Rookie stud.  Include a far below average wide receiver group and this team is heading for another top 10 pick in the 2013 draft.

Josh Cribbs and Greg Little are the only possible other standout players, but it will depend on the quarterback if Cribbs has the ability to be the dominating force that he has the talent to be.  And the same can be said for Greg Little, who flew well under the radar last year, compare Little’s stats to that of A.J. Green.  McCoy showed last year he did not have the release to get the ball out to Cribbs on deep routes, and the underneath routes were heavily supported by linebacker help taking him out of nearly every play.  If Weeden gets the start then Cribbs or Little  has a chance to be a low #2 fantasy receiver, but both will need to be sleeper picks after the 10th round to hold value.

UPDATE:

Cleveland Browns safety, third year player Joe Haden, has been notified by the NFL league office that he has failed a random drug test.  Test results showed Haden had Adderall in his system, a drug used to treat ADD and ADHD also a commonly abused stimulant.  The NFL will conduct a second test on the original sample to conclude wether or not the positive result was accurate.

If Haden’s test comes back positive a second time, the league could suspend Haden for up to 4 games with out pay.  Joe Haden will have the opportunity to appeal if the test come back positive.

Along with the bad news on Joe Haden, Cleveland fans have worse news regarding third overall pick Trent Richardson.  Richardson will travel to Florida to be evaluated by superstar surgeon Dr. James Andrews.  The Browns released a statement earlier today:

Trent Richardson is traveling to Pensacola, Fla., where he will have his left knee further evaluated by Dr. James Andrews tomorrow.”

UPDATE 2:

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported and it has been confirmed that Trent Richardson is scheduled to have a minor procedure done on his left knee to remove a small piece of cartilage.  The surgery is not expected to require much rehab as it will be a small incision and a simple removal of loose depris.  This does change his Fantasy Football status, but anyone who was thinking of taking Richardson as their primary fantasy running back was going to have bigger issues this season than Richardson maybe missing through week 2.
